Launch Your Dream by Dale Partridge is a book giving tips to Entrepreneurs to help them launch their passion into a business. As a youth pastor, I read business books to help me shed light in a new way to help me be better leader. While targeted for starting businesses, there are a ton of things as youth workers that we can take from this book that will help us take our ministries to the next level.
- You need to plan. In this book, Dale writes the best business launch successfully from having a great plan. As youth ministries, we need to plan. The most successful youth ministries I have seen have a great plan. They are way ahead in planning sermon series, they know what they need for their event next month, and the leaders have access to small group questions before their small group starts. Do things come up and sometimes we fail? Of course. If we didn’t fail, then we are not doing ministry correctly. In that, if we have a plan, it is easier to adapt to conflicts that arise when we have a good plan.
- Celebrate your leaders. Dale talks about how you need to take care of your employees. He says to compensate them with more than their worth through finances and celebrating them. While we don’t specifically pay our ministry leaders, we still need to celebrate them. Since our leaders don’t get paid, there isn’t a true incentive to keep them a part of the ministry unless we celebrate them. You can take them out to dinner, write hand-written notes, give them the night off, give them a gift card, and the list goes on. There are so many ways to celebrate our leaders. Without them, ministry couldn’t happen. We need to show our leaders they matter because they do.
- “Don’t get so busy making a living that you forget to make a life.” This is the very last line in the book. That phrase is on a key hook which Dale took from his grandma’s house after her passing. It’s the phrase that sparks his passion and it is something we need to apply in our lives as youth leaders. In youth ministry, sometimes we can get so busy with sports, concerts, and more to support our students and continue to grow closer to them. While all that is important and a part of youth ministry, we ultimately need to remember to not forget to make a life. Ministry can take over our lives. The thing we need to remember is our family will always be with us. If we forget to make a life with our families, then we lose out on a life most of probably would wish we had. It’s not worth it to lose your family to ministry. God wants our families to grow together, not to be separated. We have to make sure we don’t lose sight of what truly matters most in our lives. Let’s all strive to be families that serve God together.
This book is a great read! I recommend it if you are looking to launch a new business, but also for growing as a leader. It is definitely a book that will help you and your ministry to reach the next level!
